How to Know If a Startup Idea Is Worth Building

A practical guide to judging whether an idea has enough demand to justify your time.

Start with the problem, not the product

A startup idea is easier to evaluate when you can name the painful problem, the specific buyer, and the moment when that buyer feels the pain. If the idea only sounds exciting as a product, slow down and write the customer situation first.

Look for action signals

Compliments are weak signals. Stronger early signals include votes, waitlist joins, replies that mention a budget, requests for access, and people describing their current workaround.

Define the smallest useful version

Before you build a full SaaS product, decide what the first useful version must prove. The best early version answers one demand question clearly instead of trying to impress everyone.

Ready to test an idea?

Post it to BuildBoard, collect early votes, and use waitlist demand to decide whether it deserves more build time.
